ENERGIEHUIS

Energiehuis is the first residential block in the redevelopment of the former Unilever site along the Maas by Amvest and VORM Holding. The former industrial site will be transformed into a dense mixed-use district with over 1,000 homes. Mecanoo’s masterplan combines preservation of industrial heritage with new buildings.

Our design, a collaboration of Shift architecture urbanism with LAB_LAU, references the former printing house on this location through rational facades and an industrial character, using brown-red corrugated metal and reinterpreting the existing factory wall as a buffer between homes and the street.

Programmatically, Energiehuis has a strong social agenda including 102 social houses, 58 houses for residents with light care needs and a care center for 20 people who need intense care.
